Horizons

A project for “Performances au Pieds des œuvres”/ Up#3 by Lang and Bauman – proposed by Margot Dorléans and Patrice Balvay

“A line where the earth and the sky seem to meet, which limits the visual field of a person in a place with no visual obstacles.”

“A line which comes from the projection of a horizontal plane rising to the eye level of the person drawing, where the vanishing point of the horizontal lines is found in the drawing perspective.”

Intentions

The concrete sculpture installation Up#3 by Lang and Bauman combines horizontality and verticality, found in the natural setting of the beach at Le Havre, with cut-out windows on the maritime landscape, framing the horizon.

The idea of this horizon inspires the performance piece, blending dance and drawing, which we offer in the continuity of our collaboration.

We will fill the space of the Lang and Bauman installation with different items laid out on the ground which offer perspectives in which dance and drawing interweave horizontally to create a vast space leading toward the ocean.

The horizontality is felt by the body in movement for drawing and for dance. and each object may be rendered vertical, offering a resonance with the installation as an ephemeral prolongation of the work.

The strength of this installation is its literal, concrete eloquence. Concrete is very different from the pebbles and the sky, and at the same time it creates a subtle analogy to the minerality of the beach. This physicality, where contrast and alignment resonate, is also found in the way we conceive this work based on different media and materials (metal, wood, paper). Their variety allows us to modulate resistances and textures. The resistance of the object to the pressure exerted by the body, either by drawing or dancing, induces a certain kind of movement and the texture incites a certain quality of touching.

As much as the physical elements of the installation inspire us, the environment where it happens – the pebble beach, the changes in luminosity, the presence of the water – offers us many possibilities for action, for playing with it: for example, using the pebbles as a drawing tool, a base to stand on, a fulcrum, even an instrument. The use of these materials, natural elements such as charcoal, whiting, salt – allow us to create a landscape which is both acoustic and sensitive.

The installation, through its shape and balance, will generate in dance and in drawing: repetition, undulating, rising up, assymetry, the actions of hollowing out and lengthening. The base of the installation, the pebbles, by their roundness, create a certain instability, a certain sound, and circularity.

The installation shelters the piece, creating a space for contemplation, taking advantage of the moving of the installation toward the promenade to create a different perspective on the water.
It is in looking out at the horizon that we are also able to gaze into the infinite ...
